Then and Now: Light Artillery

Looking back over the last ten years brings to mind many wonderful horses and owners we have known. We will be posting “Then and Now” stories of some of our favorite horses and owners. Our first story is about Light Artillery who came to us missing three shoes with the fourth shoe on crooked. . . most people would have passed this horse by . . .

Light Artillery aka “Arty” and now known as “Maverick”. He was a last minute purchase at the track. Along for the trip was our good friend, Kriston Glushko. She had purchased Austin’s Wolf and wanted to take a ride up to the track to see where he came from. Kriston helped us pick out a few nice horses and then a trainer offered us a deal on Light Artillery. A quick vet check confirmed he would be sound enough for a second career and we loaded him up on the trailer to bring back to the farm. We fell in love with his personality before we made it home to Georgia. Light Artillery was brought to Bits and Bytes Farm to be trained and resold.

Austin’s Wolf has many wonderful Success Stories with his mom Laurie Flebotte.

Before we could find a match for “Arty” (as in “Party with Arty” as we called the trailer ride home) Kriston came to ask to purchase him since she had been a participant at the party with “Arty”.

Unfortunately, or fortunately for Austin’s Wolf, “Wolfie” did not get along with Kriston’s mare when he moved home. Kriston asked to swap Austin’s Wolf for Light Artillery and that is how she came to be his first owner. More in a later “Then and Now” story for Austin’s Wolf.

Some times it takes two or three owner’s before a horse finds his perfect match. Bits & Bytes Farm will always assist in finding a new home for a horse we have sold. Light Artillery and Austin’s Wolf did find their perfect matches.

In November of 2006, Kriston needed to find a new home for Light Artillery and asked us to help her. He was purchased by Amanda Moyer while being boarded at Bits & Bytes Farm.

Light Artillery makes himself right at home on the front porch on Thanksgiving Day. Wait till he learns to ring the doorbell! Amanda will never get any rest!

Amanda and Light Artillery were a match made in heaven. Amanda has been one of our most prolific writers of OTTB Success Stories. They will make you laugh and the photos are wonderful. My favorite is the one of Light Artillery up on the porch of the house looking though the glass door for Amanda.

The years have gone by. . . Amanda has moved several times, gotten married and is now expecting her first child. Still she is enjoying riding her “Maverick” as she now calls Light Artillery. We are very proud on her and are eagerly awaiting photos of her baby riding “Maverick”. Maybe their will be another Thoroughbred in Amanda’s future!
