Welcome to Bits & Bytes Farm on the Web. Take a virtual tour of the farm and see the beautiful thoroughbreds we have for sale. Follow their training and learn how we bring them from racetrack to a new career in the show ring, fox hunting or eventing.

California here we come . . .

Irish and Lord Sexton are off to California! Dr. Rachel Black has purchased Irish and has offered to give Lord Sexton a home on her husband's alfalfa farm.

Irish will be starting his new career as a hunter/jumper in California with his new mom Rachel. Rachel flew out to try Irish back in September and she just could not get him out of her mind. She tried other horses, hoping one would capture her heart as Irish did, but no luck. Irish is "her horse" and she is purchasing him as her birthday/Christmas present. What a great choice she has made.

Irish has had many suitors but we were very careful about who would get him. Irish was purchased by Bits & Bytes Farm as an unraced three year old. He knew absolutely nothing when he arrived. He had to be lead or ponied to go forward. Elizabeth took him on as one of her "Special Reserve" horses. These are horses that show great potential but need extra training.

Irish got that training from Elizabeth, Olympic rider Imtiaz Anees, Dean Graham, Barry, Robyn West and Paula Gunnels. It really was a team effort - that paid off with the finished product. We brought Irish along slowly as he was mentally immature.

Today, Irish is jumping three foot six fences like they are only a foot high. He has filled out and turned into one of the most gorgeous horses we have ever sold. Irish has developed a beautiful body and he has a sound mind that is now ready to begin serious work and showing.

As far as personality goes, Irish will be missed by everyone at Bits & Bytes Farm. He always had his head out of his stall looking for attention. He would grab your coat if you ignored him. He loves his hay and always grabbed a bite from the hay cart as it passed his stall. He has found the perfect home with Rachel on her alfalfa farm. He will get lots of love and the best hay available anywhere.

Rachel is following the new trend at Bits & Bytes Farm - why by one Thoroughbred, when two are better? Lord Sexton will be traveling with Irish to California.

The two horses are traveling with a special friend of Bits & Bytes Farm - Billy Powell. She runs a professional horse transportation business and often brings horses South for CANTER (www.canterusa.org). She has new equipment and a trailer with air ride suspension. The horses will glide all the way to California. We can highly recommend Billy Powell for transportation anywhere in the US. Call her at: 800-805-6165.

Lord Sexton was Elizabeth's special horse. You might remember her nickname for him was "Safe Sex". He was quiet and easy to ride the first week off the track. He started fox hunting almost immediately but when he learned to jump the hard race track life caught up with him in the form of arthritis in his left foot ankle. That does not slow him down though. He is full of life and runs and bucks in the pasture. He will be Irish's companion horse while enjoying the good life that Rachel has graciously offered him. Irish and Lord Sexton will have the choice of three large paddocks (one irrigated) and a 100 acre alfalfa field. Lord Sexton will be ridden by Rachel's children. Talk about living well. . .

Although Elizabeth is sad to see these boys go, we know that it is our role to get these horses off-the-track and find them someone special to love them.

Lord Sexton is a perfect example of just how hard racing can be on these horses. Can you offer an ex-racer a chance at a new life? We can find horses in all price ranges. We really want to hear from you if you are willing to take one that may have had an old injury but is sound now. Sometimes we can even get the horses for free! Let us know if you want to get on our list of "at risk" horses. These are the ones that may go to auction just because they are not "perfect". Many times they are sound for any discipline or maybe just for pleasure riding. This is the time of year for giving and to take care of the less fortunate. Will you help an ex-racer find a new life? Call us today.

UPDATE: Irish and Lord Sexton have been delivered safely by Billy Powell to Dr. Rachel Black in California. See the photo below.

Please call us to discuss which horse might be the best match for you based on riding skill, experience and equine personality. We do not send out videos because it is important to match the personality of the horse with the personality of the rider. We are matchmakers, not horse brokers. We have horses in a wide price range. Call us to discuss prices or to schedule an appointment. We'd love to have you come meet all of our horses--we know that it will be worth your time. Just bring peppermints!
