Welcome to Bits & Bytes Farm

Welcome to Bits & Bytes Farm on the Web. Take a virtual tour of the farm and see the beautiful thoroughbred horses we have for sale. Follow their training and learn how we bring them from racetrack to a new career in the show ring, fox hunting or eventing.

WOW! What a week!

We are behind in our updates and our travels were postponed due to Hurricane Katrina. Check out our hurricane page on how you can help equine victims of the hurricane.

Buckeye Buckaroo is 17 hands tall!
One of our two new horses - Buckeye Buckaroo is 17 hands tall!

Our trip to the track was delayed but it worked to our advantage. While we were making arrangements to bring home Buckeye Buckaroo (purchased in July but we did not have a stall available) we also sold Daring Deeds to Carol Quinter from Minster, Ohio.

Carol was happy to have us bring him as far as River Downs Race Track in Cincinnati, Ohio where she met us with her trailer. She brought along her trainer Cherie who had recommended Daring Deeds to us after being told about our Web site by Elizabeth TeSelle from Memphis, Tennessee. (Elizabeth has a very nice Thoroughbred for sale who we are happy to have on our Prospect Horses for Sale page.)

Word is getting out on the beautiful Thoroughbreds we are finding at the track. Two days before we were to leave for Ohio, we put up our first two September Prospect Horses. They were both sold in two days!

Onefortheroad is "on the road agian" to Aiken, SC.
Onefortheroad is "on the road again" to Aiken, SC.

Mary Forrester of Aiken, Ohio was quick to recognize the potential in our three year old bay prospect - Onefortheroad. Mary is a well known trainer of eventing horses and hunter/jumpers so we know she has the skills to bring along a baby. Congratulations Mary. Our grey filly has one more race to run before she can move on to a new career.

Oscar is a registered paint horse who used to pony the Thoroughbreds to the race track.
Oscar is a registered paint horse who used to pony the Thoroughbreds to the race track.

While we were preparing for our trip, we found out about a "pony" horse that was ready for a new job. "Pony" horses are used to pony the race horses to the track on race day or to morning workouts. A "pony" horse is a really quiet and sane animal who takes a lot of abuse from the young Thoroughbreds who are keyed up to race. Usually they are stout quarter horses who can handle being banged into.

Occasionally, we know of one who is ready to retire and that is how Oscar came to be on our trailer home from the track. Oscar is a registered Paint horse who is extremely well trained. He will ground-tie in the middle of the race track with horses galloping by or walk up stairs if asked to. Congratulations to Doris Whitworth who is Oscar's new mom. Oscar the "pony" horse was picked up at our farm the day after we got home. And, Onefortheroad was on the road again to Aiken three days later.

We know of another pony horse for sale if you are interested call ASAP. He is a 16.3 hand palomino who will make a perfect trail horse.

New Horses at the Farm

So, who came home with us? Two new horses are now at the farm and will be available soon for showing.

Buckeye Buckaroo is 17 hands and seven years old. Bay.

Buckeye Buckaroo is 17 hands and seven years old. Bay. Very sweet and kind. Very much like Knight Villain - our gentle giant.

Artic Gamble is a 16 hand five year old rose grey who is starting to dapple out. He will have dapples like Barbo next year. Artic Gamble is now at Bits & Bytes Farm.
Artic Gamble enjoying his first taste of freedom at the farm. September 8, 2005

Artic Gamble came to Georgia at the last minute thanks to a few phone calls and a lot of help from several of our race track contacts at both Thistledown, River Downs and Turfway Park. We were able to have "Gamble" trailered to River Downs from Thistledown by Onefortheroad's trainer. He was received by and well cared for by Charlie's breeder/owner/trainer until we could get there on Wednesday. We have developed a network of extremely good people at the track who really care about finding homes for these beautiful ex-race horses and they go out of their way to help us. We could not have gotten Artic Gamble with a lot of help from our friends.

Update on another Bits & Bytes Farm horse . . .

Bullet Again has moved to his mom's 300 acre farm in nearby Jasper, Georgia so we finally have enough stalls for all the horses. But . . . this is the time of year where many Thoroughbreds need to find a new career. Come see our boys and help us make room for more ex-racers who will need new jobs in the next few months!

Call or come by for a visit - but please call first!

Please call us to discuss which horse might be the best match for you based on riding skill, experience and equine personality. We do not send out videos because it is important to match the personality of the horse with the personality of the rider. We are matchmakers, not horse brokers. We have horses in a wide price range. Prospect horses will not be sold to beginners or children without a full time trainer.

Not all horses are available for sale when they first come to the farm. We like to work with them for a while to teach them the basics of being a safe sport horse and to make sure they are healthy. You are welcome to visit and to get on a waiting list to be the first to ride them when we feel they are ready to be ridden by our visitors. Call us to discuss prices or to schedule an appointment. We are sorry but we cannot accommodate you if you just drop in unannounced. We'd love to have you come meet all of our horses--we know that it will be worth your time. Just bring peppermints!

Our security team springs into action. Sydney, Wizard and Zulu.
