Each weekend the boarders and the "Friends of Bits & Bytes Farm" do a group training lesson either at the farm or on the road. Why Gamble? Ride a Thoroughbred for a Good CauseThe "Friends of Bits and Bytes Farm" spent this weekend riding for a good cause - The Georgia Department of Agriculture Equine Rescue. Five Bits & Bytes Farm Thoroughbreds participated at the Carl Bouckaert Poker Ride in Kingston, Georgia. The territory is the former hunt country of Shamrock Hounds and the current home of Kingston Downs, where the Atlanta Steeplechase is held.
It was the very first outing for one of our three year-old babies - Austin's Wolf. You would have thought he had been on a several dozen rides before - he was that calm. It is really not surprising though, off-the-track Thoroughbreds have been exposed to a lot of excitement and crowds. The poker ride was calm compared to the racetrack. Barry enjoyed a great ride on him and feels that he could be taken to a fox hunt without problems. Elizabeth rode her "Special Reserve Horse - Heather's Best". He earned his name because he was on his "Best Behavior" the whole day. Heather is a former steeplechaser so the coops and stone walls of the old Shamrock Hounds hunting territory were inviting and easy for him. He was so quiet while galloping that Elizabeth was able to catch some action photos of Joe Bear and Paula galloping.
Joe Bear showed Paula he has many talents. He won Grand Champion last weekend at a dressage show and this weekend he was quietly galloping cross country with a group of riders ready to jump any fence put in front of him.
Gertjan van Roekel brought his former Bits & Bytes Farm Horse for Sale, Big Money and his wife Marie brought her former Bits & Bytes Farm Prospect Horse, Two Thumbs Up.
Marie and Gertjan had a great time galloping on chasing organizer and friend Guido Deutschler. Big Money jumped every fence like it was not even there! Marie proved to be the poker champion of our group winning third place ($50) with her poker hand. After the ride we put out a typical Bits & Bytes Farm buffet spread for all our "Friends". Many old and a even a few new friends stopped by our trailers to visit and enjoy some good food.
It was a great fall day for riding made even better by sharing a great meal with our "Friends". Stop by and say hello the next time you see our banner. There is always plenty of food and good fellowship to go around. |
