In our search for sound, sane horses, we often come across horses that are kind and beautiful but are not perfect enough for our Prospect Horses for Sale page or to bring to Bits & Bytes Farm. We have very high standards for the horses we list on our Web site.

Many times we come across horses that have a soundness problem that can be solved with time. Sometimes, they may need a career without jumping but would make excellent dressage horses or pleasure or trail horses. Sometimes the horses are sound but just small or need to find a home ASAP! If the price is really low, then the horse will sell fast. We require references for anyone interested in a Bargain Barn Horse. We never want to hear of someone taking one of these horses to auction.

We know from experience that we can place these horses but we did not want to confuse our mission: Finding good homes for sane and sound Thoroughbreds who are sound to compete in the show ring or eventing and fox hunting. We hope by our Success Stories that people will begin to understand that there are many Thoroughbreds who come off-the-track and are STILL SOUND and can excel in a new career.

But of course, there are many who have raced too long and now need a less challenging career. They still have value and these Thoroughbreds are the ones most at risk of going to auction. The rescue organizations are the safety net for these horses. The rescue groups do a tremendous job of saving these horses but they have limited resources and many times the waiting list to donate a horse is over a year! Please donate to a rescue group! You can find a list on our Links page. The rescue groups would like to save all of the horses but the resources do not allow for that.

Our Web site has become extremely successful and we have almost a 1000 people a day visiting our site! We are NOT a non profit rescue group but we can help place the horses that no one wants because they are not perfect for showing or they are small. We love all the Thoroughbreds and we want to do our part to help the horses most in need - and so we bring you our Bargain Barn page.

These horses are all especially well priced and may even be FREE to a good home (Vetting and shipping are the buyers responsibility).These horses have injuries that may or may not be fixed with an operation or time. We will share everything we know. If x-rays or other diagnostics are available, we will provide these. These horses should be closely evaluated by a veterinarian who will give you his professional opinion of what will be the best career option for the horse. If you really aren't going to do jumping and your budget is limited you should shop this page first!

Bargain Barn Horses

Beltaire - NEW!

Beltaire is a 6 year-old bay and about 16 hands. He has a great personality and insists on a daily ration of carrots. Beltaire is was an outstanding racehorse. He is a beautiful blood bay and he seems to know it. He had a chip removed from his left front ankle in the past. He returned to the races after some time off and performed well. He does have some arthritis in has front ankles although you would never know it to watch in the paddock. He has been off over a year, he moves soundly and is ready for a job. We do not recommend him for jumping with this history. Beltaire is named for a well known Detroit Free Press columnist, he has a mischievous personality. He has some hairless spots on his body from roundhouseing with his buddy Lord Charles. It grows back when they are separated. He is a joy to have around. "Hit"

"Hit" is a 11 year-old, 16'2 gelding. The only reason he is being retired is he has slowed down over the years. He is sound and clean legged. He is the old man around the track and everyone knows and loves him. He is very kind and easy to ride. If kept in the stall for too long he will crib --only then -- there are many days that he does not wear a cribbing strap. "Hit" is just a cool old horse who should make an easy transition to riding horse. He is sound to be jumped and is a neat little mover with tons of personality. I love the horses that are still sound after racing so long. "Hit" is the grandson of the great Danzig on his sire's side and Kris on his dam's side. He is a true blue blood which is why he has class and longevity.

"Hit" needs home now as the track is charging stall rent when there is no racing meet and his owners don't want to pay stall rent on him. "GW"

"GW" is a 15.2 hh 9 yr old mare (1999). She has a beautiful head and neck. "GW" would make a great hunter - her movement is very flat kneed. The owner's wife rides her down the road in a western saddle. She has no vices and she is easy to handle. Has not run since 2003. She retired sound and clean legged. She lives on her owner's farm. Holy Wonder - SOLD!

Holy Wonder is a 4 yr old (foaled 2-12-04), 15'2 hh COLT. He is still growing and has a lot of filling out to do. He does have some chips in his knees and would only be suitbale for flat work and trailriding. He would benefit from some time off. He is super easy to ride and very laid back around the barn. He stood like and angel to get his picture taken on the busy road. He could be kept a colt, if you wanted to use him for breeding. We spoke with his excersise rider and he just loves him and says "Wonder" does not have mean bone in his body. He is a nice horse. He is a grandson of leading sires Storm Cat and Holy Bull.

Stevie Loverboy is a three year-old 15.3 hand COLT. He should mature to well over 16 hands. He is currently on stall rest due to the fact that he got cast in his stall and hurt his back end. He needs two more weeks of stall rest then a month of hand walking then three months of turn out. He has never raced, but was ready, when he got hurt. He is a great mover with no vices. His legs are clean with no blemishes. Both excersise riders say he is a blast to ride very kind and easy going. The only reason "Loverboy" has a chain on his lip is we were right by the track and did not want him to jump around because he has been on stall rest. He stood like a perfect gentleman just looking at the track. He is easy to handle on the ground and very well mannered for a colt who hasn't done anything in two weeks. Absultootly - SOLD! Congratulations to Amanda Lawson

16 hh 4 year old gelding. "Toot" will only be suitable for trail riding. He has a weird roughness on the top outside joint of his knee but he is sound. It should not give him problems. X-rays will be included with him. He is a pretty lazy horse. He would much rather eat then run around. He is good to ride with no bad habits. Good in his stall and good with the blacksmith. He is a very easy keeper and will get fat quickly if fed too much. He is a good mover and is very comfortable to ride. No vices and is clean legged.

Absultootly owner is the estate of the late John Davies of Cincinnati, Ohio. After the passing of his son John III in 1990, the John & Shirley Davies Foundation was established. Dedicated to helping health, education and arts organizations in the community, it also assisted individuals who could not get help anywhere else.

Through his love of horses, John was able to give generously and innovatively to various area charities. The horses Wellness and Lynn’s Vision ( "Bubba") donated money to the Wellness Community. Christian’s Hope ("Bobbi") benefited a young boy (now 9) who was stricken with cancer of the eye at age three.

John was personally involved with many of the charities and individuals that he helped. His passions included the Wellness Community, where the memory of his son motivated him to help other cancer participants fight for recovery.
