Updates from our listing of the 25 Special Horses!

October 18, 2010 - Artic Vic is available for resale

Artic Vic - Thoroughbred horse for sale.

Artic Vic was purchased by Jennifer Keyser in 2005. He is now available for resale due to time constraints in college.

From Jennifer: These past 5 years have been wonderful. Artic Vic has been a great companion. He is very sweet, and a pleasure to ride. He is very eager to please and a wonderful horse. I was even able to bring Arctic Vic with me to college for two years now. Unfortunately, as a junior in college I now do not have the time to devote to Arctic Vic that he really deserves. I have attached recent photos of Arctic Vic so that you can see how he has grown. I really need help finding a better home for Arctic Vic. If you can please help me, I would greatly appreciate it.

March 2007 Update

Elizabeth had a chance to meet Vicky Vicky Vicky and even got to ride her in the forest.

Vicky Vicky Vicky

Elizabeth had a chance to meet Vicky Vicky Vicky and even got to ride her in the forest on a recent visit to Florida.

Vicky Vicky Vicky can be ridden with just a halter after the training she has received by her mom Robin Cannizzaro, DVM.

"Vicky's" mom Robin also demonstrated some of the natural horsemanship techniques she uses to train her horses. Click here to see Vicky Vicky Vicky's Success Stories.

"Pretty" aka Tater

Tater did fantastically at a recent horse show in Atlanta. She and her mom hadn't jumped in almost six months, so when they went to the show we had to play a little catch up. She is such a good girl. Click here to read "Pretty's" Success Stories.

Political Pull had his first trip away from the farm.

Political Pull

Political Pull had his first trip away from the farm. It was time for him to get over being afraid to cross water. Elizabeth took him to Dawson Forest in North Georgia for a trail ride with Knight Villain, Brewster and Joe Bear. It took a lead from Brewster to get "Pull" into the water but once he learned it was not too deep he willing trotted through the creek to the other side.

Political Pull he willing trotted through the creek by the end of the ride.

"Skinny" - November 2005
"Skinny" - November 2005 See his photo from July 2006 below.

Our poor little "Skinny" aka Flame has grown, put on weight, learned to jump and has found a special mom. He earned the most improved and his buyer Jessica Hughes deserves a special award herself. She took on the smallest, skinnest and most in need horse of the 25 Special Horses. She nursed him back to health, trained him and found a him permenant owner who would love him and use him to his full potential in the show arena.

"Skinny" in July 2006

Flame is super quiet and laid back and he will jump anything. He should make super children's/adult amateur horse. He is quiet enough for intermediate child. He has been to several horse shows and was always in the ribbons. Jessica has sold Flame a 14 yr old girl who just loves him. Her name is Sara Seivers of Rutherfordton, NC. Noshrinking Violet and her owner Leslie. October 2006

It is with great sadness that we have to share the news that Noshrinking Violet aka "Nellie" had to be put down. "Nellie" was put down in early January. She'd been not feeling well for a while and had colic symptoms. The vet was out several times, including for "Pooky" with colic symptoms also. "Pooky" got better immediately, but Nellie didn't.

We also lost Violet Maewon. This is from her mom Kate Helms:

I regret to say that Vi was euthanized December 1st, 2006 due to the infirmities of old age and some (likely) racing-related injuries that were aggravated by her reintroduction into light work. Dr. Megan made sure her passing was peaceful with strong sedatives and she was surrounded by lots of family and friends as well. It was heart wrenching, but the right decision to make for Vi. There is no burden greater that comes with horse ownership (or any other pet for that matter) than having to make this decision.

April 2006 - Some more background on our Special Horses

Hi Elizabeth...
Joe is an amazing trainer and caretaker. When his horses are in training they're dappled and fit and ready to go. No drugs, just love and a way of knowing what each horse needs. He treats them all as the individuals they are.

He also hates to lose....When he ran Thistle and she was beaten by Artic Vicky he claimed Vicky the next time she ran. She and Violet Maewon, they were his "Foundation Mares".They all have different personalities...Thistle the aristocrat, "Vicky", a little cranky and Violet a bit of a loner.

As a one man operation with not a lot of capital, Joe did an amazing job breeding the girls. The stud fees were always a bargain and they might not have had great performance records for various reasons, but they all had bloodlines that were a perfect match for each mare. Every one of their babies that ran won....He ran two of Thistle's kids, (one passed and one now a pony at the track),on the same day and they both won! (Most Always A Lady is their little sister). That was the same year he had Artic Vic, Uproariously Vicky and Susie Maewon. "Vic" was pretty flighty and nervous and strong willed...kind in the stall but a real handful on the track. He won in spite of himself but look at him now! Joe is so proud of him!

Vicky Vicky Vicky is a lot like her big brother so I'm sure great things will come from her too). Uproariously Vicky is all business...loves to eat and loves to be busy...she can be cranky at times but if you ignored her she comes around.

Susie Maewon, aka "Shawshank Susie" has always been my favorite! Kind and unassuming, patiently working the latch on her stall...she loves a body massage now and then. I really think she's exactly where she belongs now. Joe and I always said she needs a young girl to spoil her!

Bad Hombre. . .He was so tall and lanky as a three year old that when he would canter he would sometimes cross his legs and fall. Then he'd get up, look around as if to say, "Who did that?", shake himself off and continue. He never hurt himself or anyone else.

Noshrinking Violet is just the opposite of her name, I think, but such a cutie with that white face. She was pretty shy and not really into the whole racing scene. I'll bet she's a happy girl now!

I don't know much about the rest of Joe's horses. He had some surgeries and wasn't at the track and then I moved to California. We still talk about once a month, though.

Again, God Bless you and your organization for what you do and God Bless all the people that have these wonderful horses for giving them the same love and affection that Joe did...He loves them sooo much!

Blessings,
Korinn

March 2006 - Some background on our Special Horses

Hi...
As I've been sitting here, reading "Success Stories," I am weeping tears of happiness for Joe and his horses.

I've known Joe for a very long time and have never met anyone who loves their animals more than he does.I've been living in California for 5 years and don't see Joe but talk with him often about this process he's had to go through. It was so hard for him to let those horses go but when I talked to him tonight he was a "Proud Papa," telling me all about his kids' accomplishments!

We talked about my favorites, (I'm their Auntie Korinn), and I could feel their personalities when reading their success stories... Artic Vic,aka "Goofball" Thistle, who was so beautiful she took my breath away the first time I saw her, and Susie Maewon,(I called her "Shawshank Susie" because she would escape from her stall at the racetrack once in a while)....

At the end of our conversation, he directed me to your website and I'm so glad he did! All the love and care he gave his "kids" has paid off in ways we never dreamed and this story has such a happy ending! God bless you for making that possible for him, the new owners, and all the other people involved in your wonderful organization.

Love and Blessings,
Korinn Chigris
